Great fun at a brisk pace. And in that, not what you'd expect from a 2-3 hr show with two intervals, but man does it move along quickly. The direction and acting are all top notch, with VT making the most choices as the driving force in a couple that ages 40 years in 3 acts, but never grow any less self-absorbed and entitled than their first-seen eighteen-year-old selves. There is a lot of shouting 'I hate you!' (mostly from their kids, who come on the scene in Act 2) which usually turns me off to a play, but this one was just so funny all the way through - the characters being shouted at generally deserved being shouted at, if only to see whether that would get through to them. And when it didn't, somehow it was funnier still.
Extra half star over 4 for never having a slow moment, having wonderful acting, and making a reasonable point about the baby boom generation. Half-star less than 5 for not being involving on a deeply emotional level (not that it was trying to). Highly recommended in any event, and while it was sold out to June 2, some tickets may be available since it was extended to June 9 after it opened to such strong press. |
